A view of the William H. R. Lykins house, Lawrence, Kansas Territory. This probably is the second house built by Lykins on the future site of Lawrence. He settled in the area on May 26, 1854, many weeks before the first Emigrant Aid Society party arrived. Lykins built one house northwest of the present-day Lawrence in May 1854. In August of that year, he built another house near the future site of the Emigrant Aid Company's sawmill on the south bank of the Kansas River. The photograph is from a cabinet card made by Leonard, 613 Kansas Ave., Topeka, Kansas.

Alfred Gray was a resident of Quindaro, Kansas Territory and an attorney. He was involved in a number of land and other business dealings. This photograph of Gray was taken after the territorial period in 1882.

Jason Brown was one of John Brown's sons. He came to Kansas in February 1855 along with his brothers John Jr, Owen, Salmon, and Frederick and settled near Osawatomie. He was involved in numerous free state activities. This image is from later in his life.

Samuel Newitt Wood was an active participant on behalf of the free state cause. He served in the territorial legislature and was a delegate to the Leavenworth Constitutional Convention. He was also involved in some of the armed conflicts. He settled in Chase County, Kansas Territory.
